Outdoor lovers – come one, come all: in Mathews we definitely do not suffer from a nature deficit having such an abundance of Mother Nature at her finest. There are so many great things to see and do and frequently our favorite activity is NOTHING at all. With no stoplights, three fantastic beaches and zero population growth in the last century, Mathews was voted one of the top five Coolest Small Towns in America.

Haven Beach
We spent most of the week exploring Mathews County and we discovered secluded beaches, interesting shops and excellent restaurants.

On the WaterThe Water: Mathews has over 200 miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline so Getting Out on the Water always offers a wonderful opportunity to see our county as its best. At Grandview, we provide two LL Bean kayaks for use on the East River, accessed from our dock, but for those who want a guided tour or perhaps a Standup Paddleboard adventure, we recommend local businesses Mobjack Kayaking or Bay Country Kayaking. Many of our guests bring their own kayaks and take advantage of our excellent access to the Mathews County Blueways Watertrails. For those wishing to enjoy a leisurely sightseeing cruise, Mathews Deadrise Charters offers local tours on a classic workboat including an oyster shucking demonstration.

FishingFishing: Mathews County offers excellent access to the lower Chesapeake Bay and its bounty of great fishing. From Grandview’s pier, guests catch pan fish like spot and croaker and occasionally rockfish, redfish and speckled trout. To go after the Bay’s trophy fish like cobia, flounder and large rockfish, try one of our local fishing charter services/guides such as Capt Chris Newsome.

1tdd grandviewBird and Wildlife at Grandview and in Mathews is simply amazing with ten coastal trails that are part of the Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trails system. Our December 2014 annual Audubon bird count recorded 105 species and 18,000 birds. Our favorites include ospreys, herons, egrets, eagles, bluebirds and our resident Te-Quil-A Mockingbird

Cycling: Flat back roads, scenic views…what more could a cyclist want! Grandview provides cruiser style bikes for peddling throughout our neighborhood with our favorite route to the town of Mobjack and its historic waterfront. Guests looking for a more serious adventure often bring their own bikes to explore the great views and easy routes of varying distances throughout the county. For avid cyclists, check out Mathews’ annual Tour de Chesapeake with multiple routes and a fun-filled weekend of activities.

Local Artists, Craftsmen and Shopping provide a leisurely way to spend your day off the water. Mathews has quite a few local artists and our cottages feature pieces from several of our favorites including the nearby Poddery. Throughout the year, many artists welcome guests to their studios and annually in the fall, Mathews hosts an Open Studio Art Tour. Also the Visitors Center offers many of their works for sale.

Restaurants: While our cottages provide kitchens designed for and by an avid cook, local restaurants are a superb way to relax and experience the flavors of your vacation spot. We enjoy all of the restaurants in Mathews! A few of our favorites: The White Dog Bistro and Southwind Pizza.

Day Trips: For those who want to explore a bit outside of the county, we are conveniently located an hour from Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Water Country in Williamsburg and 45 minutes from Yorktown. Want to play in the sand? Just 20 minutes from Grandview, we have three great beaches for walking, shelling, birding, or just kicking back and building sand castles.
