GrandviewIn 1998, we became the third owners of Grandview which was built in 1946 by master carpenter John Mason. At purchase, we found a handmade sign in the shed indicating that Mr. Mason had named his home Grandview. We loved the name and kept it!
The following year we started a decade plus renovation and improvement project to expand the outdoor living space, enhance the view and restore and increase the gardens while keeping the original charm. After four years of being weekenders, we moved to Mathews permanently to enjoy the laid back life style. We now live at Grandview year round and are on site to help make your trip to Mathews County a memorable one.Grandview

In 2011 we renovated the original owners' cottage and created the Crab Shack. The luxurious Shack has a full, gourmet kitchen, a roof top deck with amazing views of the East River and an indoor swing! In 2013 (two years to the day of starting the Shack's renovation), we started construction in our former soybean field of the Fish House, our two bedroom/two bath cottage. Designed with a family of four (or two couples) in mind, we've taken all the positive designs of the Shack....but made them bigger.

After the completion of the Fish House, we had a huge empty field or as we saw it a blank canvas for another one of master gardener Richard's creations. So in 2014 we added a grove of trees & a small orchard and our biggest play area yet: our five hole mini golf course. The mini golf course is complete with a relaxation area including the shade frame (the "Shanty") and kiwi vines growing to create its future shade.

GrandviewWe hope that Grandview quickly works its magic on guests with its privacy, abundant nature and relaxation. The birdlife is simply amazing (Karla's dad is an ornithologist so we have a great appreciation) and on a clear night you can't believe the stars! From our pier you can catch fish or crabs or put on some waders and pick some oysters. Dave's even caught a snapping turtle and a gar from the pier! Mathews County's culture is a bit like the Florida Keys (which we love) in that you quickly adapt to island time. You stop worrying about all your emails and to do lists and time is measured by meal time, cocktail time and nap time. Our double hammock swing poolside was purchased on a trip to Key West. We specialize in getting people to relax, take a deep breath and enjoy nature in all its glory. Mathews County doesn't even have a stoplight but we have 90 miles of water trails great for kayaking and boating and nine coastal trails that are part of Virginia's Birding & Wildlife Trails system. For bicyclists, the Tour de Chesapeake is held annually in Mathews offering bike routes of varying lengths.

We are conveniently located an hour from Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Water Country in Williamsburg and 45 minutes from Yorktown. If you want some sand in your tooes, we are a short drive from Haven Beach, Aaron Beach and Bethel Beach in Mathews with great birding, shell gathering, strolling. We are centrally located between Virginia Beach and Wasington DC and a mere 90 minutes from Richmond.

We hope your time at the Grandview will show you why we came to Mathews for a weekend and decided to stay a lifetime!

Grandview Sunset

What a wonderful gift you offer people. How often can you watch the sun rise with your daughter because you both want to, instead of the wary eyed parent who has had no sleep, or share in your son’s first fish preparing lesson and watch him eat it that night.
